NAZUNA KYOTO TSUBAKI ST., Kyoto – A Smart Stay in the City
About the Hotel
Historic Machiya Transformation
Nazuna Kyoto Tsubaki St is a luxury ryokan renovated from a 110-year-old L-shaped alleyway of machiya (traditional Japanese townhouses) spanning 1,400 sqm. The reception building leads guests into Tsubaki St, a nostalgic street reminiscent of Kyoto's historic geisha districts. At dusk, chochin (paper lanterns) and oki-andon (lamps) illuminate the stone-cobbled path.
Nature-Themed Rooms
The 23 guest rooms are named after natural elements: TAKE (bamboo), MIZU (water), IWA (stone), HANA (flower), and HA (leaf). The 9 twin rooms (TAKE, MIZU) include a first-floor living room and second-floor bedroom. The 14 deluxe rooms (IWA, HANA, HA) add a second-floor tatami area for extra guests. All rooms feature private semi open-air baths and décor inspired by their themes.
Kyoto-Inspired Dining
Breakfast includes dashi chazuke with rice from Kome-Ryotei Hachidaime Gihey, a local Edo-period rice company, paired with bonito broth. Kyoto pickles and obanzai (seasonal small dishes) are served on one plate. A Western breakfast option features toast from Kyoto's Five Run bakery and sausage made with Kyoto pork. Dinner offers a Wagyu course with marbled meat, truffle Yukhoe, and sukiyaki.
Central Kyoto Access
The ryokan is 1.5 km from Karasuma Station, 2.5 km from Kyoto Tower, and 4.5 km from Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace are within 3 km. Itami Airport is 50 km away.

Guest Ratings & Reviews
My stay at the hotel was truly enjoyable. The rooms with an outdoor hot tub were a real treat, offering a relaxing experience. The service was top-notch, with excellent room service and housekeeping. The location, although not the most convenient for quick sightseeing, was set in a lovely area of Kyoto accessible via JR3 from Kyoto station. The dining experience, particularly the fried fish, left a delicious impression. The facilities were great, providing everything I needed for a comfortable stay.
The hotel is situated in a lovely area of Kyoto, but its location on JR3 from Kyoto station to sightseeing might not be the most convenient if you are short on time. The rooms come with an outdoor hot tub, offering a unique experience, but the dining menu seems to focus heavily on grilled fish. The service is commendable with room service and housekeeping available, though the overall value for the price could be better.
Staying at this hotel was a mixed experience. The rooms with an outdoor hot tub were a luxurious treat, but the sightseeing was not so convenient if you're short on time. The service was top-notch with excellent room service and a pleasant welcome drink. The dining experience with baguettes was delightful, though. Overall, a comfortable stay with a few inconveniences.
